FLIP IT! Behavior Guidance Strategy

Over three sessions, this training focuses on an easy-to-use four step strategy in response to challenging behaviors. This strategy relies on a foundation of relationship, empathy and understanding of trauma and toxic stress and puts together research based techniques proven to support social-emotional development and improve behaviors. Participants will learn about the four steps: (F)eelings, (L)imits, (I)nquiry and (P)rompts, how to use them in a variety of situations, as well as practice using them in response to behaviors most prevalent in the classroom.

This is one of six modules in the Best Practices Series that supports Early Achievers by emphasizing high-quality adult practices measured by the Environment Rating Scale (ERS-3). This session introduces best practices for engaging in rich interactions to promote language and literacy development. We will explore what research says about how children learn, what adults can do to prepare the environment for success, and how adult-child interactions can complement children’s learning without interrupting it.

A second path to effective teaching — and parenting — especially of young children, lies in honing our ability to also recognize the unteachable moment, when tempers and emotions run hot and things seem to erupt out of control.
